We take security very seriously here at Gem Logic, that’s why we operate 100% in-house. When you bring your valuable items to us, you can be sure of the following:
For most pieces, it takes 4 working days to appraise your jewellery, not including the day you drop it off. If you have more than 10 items that need to be valued, then we will quote you a timeframe when you bring your items in.
In most cases, our priority service means you can pick up your jewellery the same day that you drop it off, provided that we receive the item/s shortly after 9:00 am. Otherwise, you can pick your item up the next day, at the same time it was dropped in to us.
All priority service valuations need to be booked in with us at least 2 working days prior to the service day. Please feel free to call or email with your preferred day and the number of items required and we will be happy to confirm your booking.
Upon your arrival at our lab on the 4th floor, 55 Gawler Place, we’ll discuss the purpose of the valuation with you, then we’ll give your jewellery an initial visual examination and advise upon any immediate issues (such as wear & tear, damaged gemstones or gemstone mounts etc.) with your jewellery.
We’ll then provide a set price, which is based on the type of valuation needed, the type & complexity of the jewellery and how quickly you need it done.
Once we have agreed, we will issue you with a receipt for your jewellery which will list your details (name, address etc.) required for the document, contact details, a brief description of all items left, the type of valuation/s required, the agreed completion date and the agreed charge.
If needed, jewellery will first be cleaned in an ultra-sonic to remove any dirt that might be lodged within the settings and thereby affect the identification or grading of the stone/s.
Any diamonds or gemstones will be tested in our laboratory for identification of the type of stone and whether it is a natural (produced by nature within the earth) or synthetic (laboratory grown by man).
All gold or other metals will be tested for identification and purity. This is either done with an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) machine which gives an exact percentage of gold and other alloys (resulting in a tested carat of the gold) or with the gold rub and acid test method.
Any diamonds will then be graded for “the four C’s” (colour, clarity, cut quality and carat weight). This information will be used in the description section of the valuation and also be used in sourcing a cost for the stone.
Any natural gemstones will then be graded for quality. This involves a determination of the colour of the gemstone, the size and quantity of the inclusions within the gemstone and the quality of the cutting of the stone. This information will also be used in the description section of the valuation and also be used in sourcing a cost per carat for the stone and the value of the item.
The carat weight of any diamonds or gemstones will then be calculated. Unless specifically requested and authorized, we do not remove any gemstones from the mount. Therefore, the carat weight of any gemstones must be estimated. This can be done quite accurately using precise millimetre gauges and volumetric calculation formula’s.
The mount of the item will be examined and the type and quality of the manufacturing process determined. This will vary from item to item, depending if it has been hand-made, cast (either from a cad-cam produced model or a mass produced wax model), or made by a stamping press or a machine. Along with the carat of gold and the final gram weight of the item, this information will be used to arrive at a final value for the mount.
Using all of the above information on diamonds & gemstones costings, gold &/or precious metals, manufacturing quality and time taken to manufacture, setting of gemstones, finishing & polishing, any rhodium plating and any other manufacturing costs, we arrive at a final value for the item.
The item is then fully described to form the wording of the valuation and entered on the document along with the calculated value.
Last of all, the item is then photographed with a macro-lens to allow for an accurate close-up image, which is then transferred to the completed document.
All items are then transferred back to our safe where all clients goods are kept until collection.
